“I thought she was with you,” said the father.
“I thought she was with you!? Exclaimed the mother.
As the couple shuffled around their Maui resort, they felt utter shock that their toddler had disappeared. They ran around the hotel shouting their daughter’s name…but to no avail. After a few minutes of searching the mother remembered that Alexis had mentioned her interest in the hotel’s Jacuzzi. The father sprinted to the Jacuzzi only to find his two-year-old daughter floating to the top. He plunged into the steaming water and franticly picked up his child. He cringed at the sight of Cardiopulmonary resuscitation but laid her on the floor and attempted to resuscitate her as the mother finally reached the area screaming and yelling for help. Luckily there was a nurse in the vicinity who immediately ran to the rescue. She performed Cardiopulmonary resuscitation and suddenly Alexis spit up water and began breathing heavy. A few minutes later the paramedics reached the hotel and checked her vital signs. It was clear that although she was semi-conscious, Alexis was still in critical condition and would have to be sent to the hospital.
“Alexis is in stable condition,” the doctor began.
“However she has suffered severe damage to her brain due to the lack of oxygen in her circulatory system and has a chance of mental illness.”
Alexis’ parents cringed at the news as they thoughtfully stared at their bedridden daughter. The thought of mental illness killed her parents’ soul but they would have to wait and see the outcome of her recovery before it became official. The family prayed all night in the hospital room hoping for the best. It was until the next day that Alexis woke up in a deep haze. She did not utter any words but used the emotion in her eye and head gestures to convey her feelings. Three days after the accident she was released from the hospital and the family was able to return to New York City from their tragic Maui vacation.
